What is SEO?
Aim For The Top
Dozens, hundreds and often thousands of websites are competing with yours for top ranking spots on Google, Yahoo and Bing. How do you make sure your site reaches the top?
Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving an organizations visibility online, also known as creating a Web Presence. A phrase used since the mid 1990’s, SEO’s main function is to help search engines differentiate between useful and meaningless web content.
In order to get our clients found on Google, Bing and Yahoo, DMG begins by collecting and organizing information about the company and its competition. This includes a full key word analysis uncovering what potential customers are looking for using organic search engines (meaning the exact words and phrases they type into a search bar).
We then create a plan of action based on desired preferences and company goals in an effort to identify, inform and plot out the systems required to maximize the success of our clients’ online marketing.
Main Components of SEO: Search Engines pay close attention to the following when ranking a page for quality and potential top ranking: Updated Pages & Indexes, Blogs, Meta Tags & Data, Page Titles & Descriptions, Social Media Feeds such as Twitter, Internal & External links and Independent Directory Rankings such as Dmoz.
Lassies Loot. An SEO Case Study.
Timmy sells vermillion colored dog toys online at LassiesLoot.com and has come to DMG asking for help increasing his web presence.
Step 1. Research- Get inside your customers head
An often overlooked part of SEO is finding the RIGHT keywords.
After initial key word research we find that there are 0 searches per month for “vermillion dog toys” and 10,000 searches per month for “red dog toys”. Clearly Timmy should refer to his dog toys as red instead of vermillion. Because content is king for search engines, having the right words and terms in your site is the best way to get Google and others to refer the right traffic. If someone is looking for red dog toys and Timmy only refers to his dog toys as “vermillion”, Timmy WILL NOT GET FOUND for what his potential clients are actually searching for.
Step 2. Key Word Optimization- Create a focused plan
Having found out exactly what potential clients are searching for, DMG and Timmy work together to select keywords and create both external and internal content that optimizes for those terms. This includes both the copy clients can see and the internal webmaster code that can only be seen by search engines.
Step 3. Directory Listings- Tell search engines you are awesome
Making all search engines and directories aware of the changes to Timmy’s site is the important next step. Hand-listing Timmy’s website in all the major databases properly is critical. DMG does not use an auto submission service to do this, knowing that all reputable search engines ignore these types of submissions. DMG submits a new site map to Google, laying out all the changes in key words, content and focus. DMG also creates a Google Places page, a Yahoo local page, and a Bing business page as well as listing LassiesLoot.com in other meaningful public forums such as Yelp.
Step 3. Social Media- Tell people you are awesome
Because updated content is an important factor for search engine ranking, Social Media has become a critical part of SEO. YouTube is now the 2nd largest search engine in the world and 1 out of every 4 page views online is a facebook page. DMG creates professional social media forums such as facebook pages, blogs, twitter accounts and YouTube channels for Timmy’s business in order to showcase fresh content, keep Lassies Loot in the public eye and to continually communicate important information about his company.
Lassies Loot has a business facebook page where dog lovers post pictures of their dogs playing with Timmy’s dog toys. Timmy posts information about upcoming events and tradeshows he will be attending; he asks his followers questions about the type of dog toys their pets like best. By the end of the year, there are 2,000 people following this page and because of this attention his site continually rises in organic search engine rankings.
Timmy hires DMG on an ongoing basis to make sure that new, fresh content is being created on a monthly basis. DMG and Timmy continue to create videos, post blogs and research new markets using analytics reporting and client access through conversations via social media.
Timmy sells Lassies Loot at an obscenely high profit margin and retires to the islands, a king of industry and a lover of dogs… The End. Or is it just the beginning? Click here to find out more...
